We all want more from our relationships. Most men like being in a loving relationship. My guess is that about 25% of men are going to roam,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], no matter how good their relationship is at home. But for the others, because they value home, family,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and their partner, they don’t roam, or wouldn’t if they were getting their sexual, and even more important, their intimacy needs met.
This is a big subject but I have a few ideas I’d like to share from my workshops and from my studies of cultural anthropology.
The men I’ve talked to about this subject tell me,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], of course, they would prefer to be able to have sex with any woman they find attractive. Men seem to be able to have sex without it meaning anything, whereas women usually need to at least make up that the man cares. So women have difficulty understanding when their partner says, “It didn’t mean anything.” After a woman has sex with a man a “bonding” hormone,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], oxytocin,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is created in her body. She bonds with him because she might have gotten pregnant and she needs that man to take care of her. Survival is from where we have evolved. That deep biology is still an important part of us.

Men prefer sex with love. But they generally have a strong sex drive because those hunters who were the most easily aroused got the most women pregnant, passing on their genes. Biology again. Because the drive is so strong, they need to do something with it. It’s asking too much of them to stifle it. And since it’s the best way to create a strong bond between a man and a woman, why not make the very most of it? If we think of monogamy as a path to the deepest love,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it can be a beautiful thing. If we want it as a way to control and own our partner, then it runs counter to our highest aspirations. Love and intimacy is the goal of marriage, not ownership. Stress management provides individuals with techniques to handle stress on a daily basis. Learning to cope with stress will help you live a happier, healthier life.
Stress is defined as a failure to respond appropriately to emotional or physical threats whether they are real or imagined. The signs of stress are easily recognizable and can present themselves as cognitive, behavioral, emotional or physical symptoms. Therefore when presented with stress one’s whole demeanor, attitude and presence can change. Cognitive, emotional and behavioral symptoms include poor judgment, negative outlook, anxiety, worrying, moodiness, irritability, agitation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], inability to relax, loneliness, isolation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], depression, lack of concentration and absentmindedness. Physical symptoms include increased heart rate, breathing, energy, blood pressure, cholesterol and production of sweat. Stress can also cause physical symptoms of aches and pain, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, chest pain, upset stomach and headache. Chronic stress that occurs over a longer period of time consistently can cause both physical and psychological damage to a person. Long-term stress depresses the immune system leaving it susceptible to infections, disease,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and illness. Stress promotes the accumulation of visceral fat, which is a leading cause of obesity. Additional chronic stress has been connected to ulcers, cancer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], heart disease, increased outbreaks of psoriasis, depression and diabetes. In children who experience chronic stress a stunt to developmental growth is normally seen.
It wasn’t until the 1930’s that the word stress was used to characterize a condition where a stressor causes stimulus. Hans Selye,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an endocrinologist, witnessed an inappropriate physiological response to demand placed on a human or animal. Before coining the term stress was considered a normal part of daily function and encounters that results in strain. Now, we know that stress plays an important part in physical, emotional and mental well being.
Coping with stress is not an easy task. Everyone adapts to stress differently and some people have an easier time dealing with stress than others. The way that the body reacts to a stressor is understood through the General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which describes the effects of stress on the body. Depending upon the intensity and duration of the stressor will determine if the stress is acute-short term or chronic-long term. At the first sign of stress the bodies stress response is in a state of alarm. The body reacts by producing adrenaline which causes a fight or flight response. Fight or flight is the body’s way of preparing to fight (cope, adapt) or flee. The second stage i resistance to stress. If a stressor persists the body must find a means of coping with the stress. Does the body have a way to adapt to the strain or demands of the surrounding environment? As we cope with stress, the body’s resources (nutrients,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], enzymes, proteins, amino acids, vitamins, minerals) are gradually depleted. The final stage is exhaustion where the body’s resources are completely used up,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], leading to inability to function normally. Weakness, fatigue decreased energy, inability to concentrate or think clearly are all signs of exhaustion. Long-term exhaustion can be detrimental to ones health and can manifest disease. Although, these stages represent a model of how stress affects the body, stress can manifest itself differently in every person.
Stress is a natural part of life. These days there are very few who don’t get stressed over money, the economy, the housing market, jobs or even family. Our bodies naturally react to stress through blood pressure, heart rate, respiration, body temperature and muscle contractions. Everyone deals with stress on different levels and in different ways. However, if one is not able to deal with stress it can ultimately lead to mental and physical exhaustion.

Anxiety, though painful, gives us an opportunity to grow. We get a chance to see how we can get through difficult things. A chance to let ourselves triumph. Share with me how you’ve triumphed over anxiety or let me help you find your worst-case scenario solution, at [link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
There’s a critical point of difference here. The worst-case scenario might consume your thoughts, but do you ever sit down with those worried thoughts and see them through to completion? Anxiety wins most of the time because it’s like a constant buzz saw in the back of someone’s brain, nagging and whining. It can’t be escaped! But, at the same time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the person's not really paying attention to it. They’re trying, with all their might,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to ignore it.
Well, after this they’re not going to be worrying anymore, are they?
As a therapist, I’m always working to find practical, easy-to-use and quick solutions to problems my clients are having. One of the conditions most appropriate to treat with quick techniques is anxiety. While working with my anxiety clients, I’ve found a five-minute technique that works particularly well and begins to show results immediately.
Here’s Step Two: figure out how you will get through the worst-case scenario.
The key word here is you. You are the only one who can defeat the anxiety. Focus on your own unique abilities and strengths,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Anxiety tries to won by taking your power away. So think about how you will take that power back.
That’s what we’re looking for here. Options. Not idealisms, not false hope. Real solutions for real people. Try it for yourself. How could you overcome the worst-case scenario?
You may freeze up when you hear this question. Or, you might be nonplussed. “Are you kidding me?” You might say to yourself. “I’m always thinking about this! There’s never a time I’m not thinking about the worst that could happen!”

For the social situation above, the absolute worst-case scenario would be that you are so overcome with shame and hurt from the laughter that you drop dead then and there.
This can be a little tricky to define. It might seem like in the social anxiety scenario above, the worst-case scenario would be getting laughed at. For our purposes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that’s NOT the worst-case scenario. The laughter is actually the source of anxiety. The worst-case scenario is the potential result of the feared action.
As you’ve already guessed, this is the “Worst-Case Scenario” Strategy. You may have already worked with a variation on this technique; it isn’t necessarily new. But after dealing with a high volume of anxiety clients, I’ve become able to explain it in a series of simple steps. There are only two steps, so if you want to escape the pain of anxiety, you can’t afford not to read on.
When you’re defining the worst-case scenario, start with the absolute worst and go up from there. Some lesser (but still significant) fears might be that you start crying, blushing or become unable to speak.
Although it might seem strange right now to pay attention to the thing you’ve been trying to avoid, it’s what you have to do in order to get past it. Take it out of the dark, and into the light. Examine it, and ask yourself, “What’s the worst that could happen?”

What could this person do to get through it? If they’re unable to speak, they can’t really joke back. But they could shrug their shoulders. They could wave the laughter off, and go text a friend for support. They have options. Anxiety doesn’t end their choices. Really, it only expands them.
Just for the sake of having a little bit more to work with, let’s go with a slightly less intense worst-case scenario. This time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], after being laughed at, the person becomes paralyzed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], unable to speak. Embarrassing, certainly. But unmanageable? Definitely not.
Using the example again,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], take a social anxiety sufferer. Imagine the worst-case scenario with that person: getting laughed at for something they said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and subsequently dropping dead. How can they overcome that experience?
First, describe for yourself the worst-case scenario of the situation you fear, i.e. the source of your anxiety. Let’s take social anxiety as an example. If you have social anxiety, you might start feeling faint when you start thinking about being in a room with a lot of people and possibly being laughed at for something that you said.
Think I’m being silly? No! The anxiety is a formidable opponent. It holds you in thrall with this idea of a horrible, undefinable evil that will happen to you. Define the evil, and it begins to lose the power,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], because you see it for what it is.
After you’ve come up with some potential challenges,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], (Step One) there is one more step that is essential. You won’t overcome the anxiety without this step, so please,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], see it through to completion.
Let’s set aside how unlikely it is that someone would be so rude as to laugh at you in a public setting. When you have anxiety, it doesn’t matter whether the situation is likely. The anxiety has taken control.
Please understand me. I'm not trying to be flippant! But I do firmly believe that overcoming anxiety revolves around survival. You have to know that can get through anything. It may be painful, it may have awful consequences, but YOU – powerful YOU – will get through it.
