And to relate this back to my advice regarding training in the 4–6 rep range, it’s very simple: once you can do 6 reps, you increase the weight by 5–10 lbs, and work with that weight until you can do 6 reps—which could take another couple of weeks of training—increase the weight again, and so on.
One example is a study conducted by Arizona State University wherein they reviewed 140 other weightlifting studies and concluded that training with weights that are 80% of your one-rep max produces maximal strength gains.

Although I usually pretend to be too "evolved" to play the role of victim in my life, I do catch myself at times feeling, thinking, and talking in that old, familiar, "oh poor me" kind of way. Three weeks later, it's been working like a charm - I'm sleeping better and I feel better in the morning.
1) Notice where you feel victimized. Where do you feel like a victim in your life right now? Maybe you have a big issue or challenge related to your health, finances,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], work situation, love life, or family. Maybe there are some smaller “annoyances” in your life - sitting in traffic, waiting in line,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], dealing with difficult people,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], etc. - that leave you feeling a bit victimized. Take some honest inventory, without judgment, and notice where you go into victimhood yourself.
The more I reflect on this piece of profound wisdom, the more I realize how true it is. Whenever I find myself feeling as though "It's not fair," or wondering "Why is this happening to me?" - I notice that I’m not at all in touch with anything I'm grateful for in those moments. On the flip side, when I take the time to focus on what I appreciate about myself,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], those around me, my life, and/or life in general - it's almost impossible for me to experience victimhood at the same time.
I got a wonderful email recently which exemplified this power of gratitude over victimization. Here's the note (with permission from the man who sent it to me):
I lay there and made a mental list of all the things in my life that I was grateful for, and in no time at all I was fast asleep. No longer worried about what would happen if I woke up in the middle of the night, the next night when I awoke I made a mental list of all the things I appreciated about myself. It was easier than I thought and soon I was asleep with a smile on my face.
I've never been a good sleeper. For the past 17 years I've had to medicate myself to fall asleep. On a good night I wake up once; on an average night, two maybe, three times. I’ve done all the things you're supposed to do to encourage better sleeping habits. Some nights when I wake up after 3 AM, that's it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I'm done. I can't will myself back to sleep - my day starts at 5 AM with a morning trip to the gym - which then makes for a very long day.
While I'm not quite ready to give up my sleeping pills yet, I’ve been able to shift my head space when I wake in the middle of the night. So my new approach is not to stress about why I'm not sleeping but to reflect on all the things that I'm grateful for or what I appreciate about myself.
I don't know if I will be able to stop with the sleeping aid but waking up in the middle of the night is a whole lot more pleasant.
3) Think about, feel, and express what you're grateful for. Gratitude is a wonderful concept and a transformative practice. Most of us know the importance of being grateful, but we can only benefit from it when we experience our gratitude. We can't be grateful in theory (or in the past or the future), we can only be grateful NOW. Whether we choose to find the silver lining in difficult circumstances, use the situation (as Ian did) as a opportunity to focus on some of the things we appreciate about life, or simply remember to focus on what we're grateful for at random times during the course of our day - gratitude is one of the most life-altering emotions we can tap into and experience as human beings. And,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the great news is that we have access to gratitude any time we choose.
Now for the good stuff...One night several weeks ago I lay awake in the middle of the night. I tossed and turned and started to fret about not being able to get back to sleep. On my night table I saw your book which I had been reading earlier in the evening and I reflected on a couple of themes - appreciate myself and be grateful - and I started to think about what those meant to me.
I just finished reading your book Focus on the Good Stuff and I had a breakthrough that I wanted to share with you.
Here are a few things for you to think about and do, in order to expand your own capacity for gratitude in the face of situations, relationships,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and circumstances which may have you currently feeling like a victim.

Even then you are not supposed to pour it directly upon the mouse itself. Spray or pour some on a cloth, that you're going to use for cleaning and wipe the entire surface area of the mouse. I hope you know, that it is best if the mouse is unplugged during this process. Whey and Soy were portrayed as the best choice for health, low cost and nutritional value. Now listen carefully to what I am going to tell you next. THEY ARE LYING TO YOU! The Chinese did not eat unfermented soybeans because of the large quantities of natural toxins or “antinutrients” that can cause serious gastric distress,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], reduced protein digestion and conditions of the pancreas including cancer.1 Unfermented soy is not healthy at all and large quantities, such as the levels currently consumed in America, is very detrimental to our health. Surrender,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. What does it mean? How is it relevant to childbirth and motherhood?

Starting with willingness as a small bright yellow dot in the centre of emptiness and unknown and allowing white and yellow light and support to come in and gradually my ‘self’ growing as a dot to a more intense wonder of surrender then more colours coming in and from out of me until I meet what is ‘out’ there and connect and join up to a vital web, then all the colours and intensity of the universe join up and we explode in light and joy and surrender is no longer suffering but an experience of wonder and joy, vitality and colour of the universe.
These are questions I have asked myself. There is no formula and each woman will find her own unique way. The essential qualities I have found so far that help are: accepting the situation (even if it is not the way you would like it to be), relaxing into the not knowing and allowing it to be there, noticing how you have been able (or not) to surrender in other areas of your life. An exploration of what that means to the pregnant woman can her help to prepare for the unknown, the transition and the rite of passage into motherhood.
In my own journey into motherhood I eventually experienced surrender after a long labour of holding onto my ideal birth with all my might. This holding actually slowed down my labour process. This is because the act of holding creates tension in the body and tension releases stress hormones that slow down the release of oxytocin (the birth hormone),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], hence labour was slow to progress. After 6 days of labouring and clinging tight to my perfect image of having a home birth, I went to hospital ready to have my baby cut out of me. When I got to the ugly hospital and saw the ugly labour ward with the ugly view from the window, I suddenly knew that that was the right place for me to birth my baby and I did it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but only after letting go of everything I believed to be true about the way I was going to give birth.
In my work as an antenatal teacher, I have explored the issue of surrendering with my clients. In this example I asked the women to draw what surrendering into the unknown meant to them and this is what they came up with:
I first learnt about the meaning of surrender many years ago when I was travelling. Two weeks into my journey,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], while camping on a remote island in Fiji, I got a bad bug – high fever, vomiting, no doctor and no way to escape the intense heat of the day, I rode the waves of the illness. In my weakened state,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I continued my journey to Australia and although the intensity of the bug had subsided, I was still very vulnerable and developed an exhausting relentless cough, with extremely low energy. Gradually all my joints started aching and all this time I am repeating the mantra “I mustn’t be ill, I must get better now, I am travelling and must make the most of it and enjoy myself”. For me, the last straw was when,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with all these symptoms I got caught out in the rain with no protective clothing and my inner judge was saying “Now you will really pay for it, you’ll probably get pneumonia”. All of a sudden I was forced into a place where I could go no further. I was cornered. And I just said to myself “I surrender” and in that moment everything shifted for me. I was no longer fighting my symptoms. I was the way I was, for better or for worse and there was no fight or resistance left in me. It may sound like a powerless position but in fact it was quite the opposite. I had allowed myself to “be” and felt waves of relief and acceptance wash over me. As I felt myself soften to the experience,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], almost immediately my joints stopped hurting. It was a turning point for me towards my recovery.

Surrender is simply acceptance an allowing of what is and of what has ever been, an allowing of that which seeks to express itself within you, through you and around. Fear not that in surrender you shall lose yourself sweet child, but … to embrace the wholeness by all that you are. In surrender you shall accept the light that is within to shine ever more brightly than before,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to awaken that which you seek in surrender to thy love, be not afraid for I shall be with you as I have ever been, illuminating your world with light.
So what are the conditions that allow for surrendering? What catalyses the turning point? Is it still possible to surrender when you have choices?
In pregnancy, many modern women try to think the right thoughts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], read the right books, eat the right food, attend the right classes in an attempt or as an insurance policy to have the right birth. The woman’s agenda is not the only force contributing to how the birth will unfold. The baby has her agenda and since birth is a rite of passage and an initiation, it has an energy of its own and at some point along the way a woman will need to surrender something of value and importance to her such as a belief (eg I will be calm and in control) or something she is pushing away (eg a medical intervention).
So what has surrendering got to do with giving birth and becoming a mother?
In a man’s world, the unconscious expectations and pressures on a woman are huge. A woman is expected to be level headed and logical every day of the month instead of embracing the ebb and flow of a woman’s cycle. Surrender seems to be a dirty word in our left brain culture of being in control of our lives. Women absorb images of career success in a society where material and professional status are highly rated on one hand and motherhood, childrearing and staying at home are downgraded. The modern career woman typically favours structure, control and logic in her life. When she is called to motherhood,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she finds herself in a new world of unpredictability, loss of control and sometimes chaos. The tools she has accumulated in her career world no longer serve her as she searches for new ways to be in her new role. The process of surrendering is essential in order move through this transition, this rite of passage from maiden to mother.

Nowadays women are encouraged to be in control of their birth experiences. This can manifest in a number of ways by choosing to avoid pain, choosing the date of the birth, wanting to be in control or stay calm. All these choices go against the wildness, unpredictability and the essence of birth which is surrendering into the unknown. The choices give rise to unrealistic expectations of how the birth will unfold and attachment to the outcome. Whether the attachment be to homebirth, breastfeeding, epidural or caesarean birth, the point is that birth is a rite of passage and the unexpected may arise so the more prepared the woman is to surrendering to the unknown, the easier she can embrace her birth into motherhood and gradually integrate her new role into all aspects of her being. Once the baby is born,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], mothers are also expected to continue soldiering on like a man without acknowledging sleepless night, breastfeeding and the emotional rollercoaster of motherhood.

A pair of unlikely league champions begin their duel for Major League Baseball supremacy Wednesday night in San Francisco, as the National League champion Giants host the American League's Texas Rangers at AT&T Park (8 p.m. EDT). Neither team was expected to make it to the 106th edition of baseball's World Series.
This year marks the first time in their 50-year franchise history the Texas Rangers have made it to the so-called Fall Classic,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Since their inception as a replacement for the Washington Senators in 1961 -- before moving to Texas 10 years later -- the Rangers had never even won a playoff series until this year. Now after winning two playoff rounds this month they will become the fourth team in the past six seasons to be appearing in their first World Series,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
For the Giants,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it has been 56 years since they won their last World Series title in 1954,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and that was when the franchise was based in New York,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], until moving across the country to San Francisco in 1958. That is the third longest wait in the basball's history, behind the Cleveland Indians' 62 years and the Chicago Cubs, who have not won Major League Baseball's annual championship since 1908.
Neither team has had an easy path through the playoffs. Texas defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 in their best-of-five game divisional series, while San Francisco needed four games to get past the Atlanta Braves.
In the best-of-seven League Championship Series, both teams needed six games to advance. The Rangers beat the defending World Series champion New York Yankees, while the Giants took the National League crown from the reigning champion Philadelphia Phillies. Giants outfielder Aaron Rowand says their pitching made the difference.
"Our pitching staff, in the bullpen,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], our starters, everybody did an unbelievable job," he said. "For them to do that and keep this team [the Phillies] down and give us the opportunity to win some games is unbelievable."
The Giants' starting pitching staff includes two-time reigning National League Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum. It also boasts a strong relief corps anchored by closer Brian Wilson, whose 48 saves led the majors this season and tied the Giants' franchise record.
But the Rangers also have strong starting pitching, led by Cliff Lee. He has been practically untouchable in the playoffs with a 3-0 record and a stingy earned run average of just 0.75 (per nine innings pitched). And he has previous World Series experience,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], having won two games last season as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies against the World Series champion Yankees.
With both teams featuring great pitching, the Series could well come down to offense, and there it appears Texas has the advantage. AL Championship Series Most Valuable Player Josh Hamilton hit for a .350 average with three home runs and seven runs batted in. The Rangers' line-up also features lead-off man Elvis Andrus, veteran slugger Vladimir Guerrero and long-time team star Michael Young. With Texas having little experience with the Giants pitchers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Young says they have to concentrate on their own strengths.
"I think the biggest thing for us is to make sure we stick with what we do well," he said. "Because as much as you can trust a scouting report or something like that, most of us have little or no experience facing a lot of these guys. So it is going to be up to us to make sure we stick to what we do well."
Although the Giants batters cannot claim the star power of the Rangers, they have been getting it done with timely hitting from players throughout the lineup. Cody Ross, rookie catcher Buster Posey and Juan Uribe have all come through with key clutch hits,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but 11 different players combined to score 19 runs during the National League Championship Series. Giants manager Bruce Bochy says his team has really come together.
"I've never had such a diversity of contribution from everybody like we have had this year," he said. "You know, we have been getting guys they have been called cast-offs and we have misfits,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but to see them coalesce into a group that has one mission -- they set aside their own ego or agenda."
And San Francisco has one other advantage -- the ability to win the close ones. Seven of the Giants' 10 post-season games have been determined by one run,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and they have won six of those contests.

President Bush and Democratic challenger Senator John Kerry squared off over the economy in their radio addresses Saturday.
President Bush cited the past week's employment figures as a sign of steady economic growth, with more than 100,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 new jobs for June.
"With more jobs, and lower unemployment, we are seeing rising consumer confidence,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], higher incomes, continued gains in the rate of home ownership, and a restored sense of opportunity,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said President Bush.
While June was the 10th consecutive month of growing employment,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the number of new jobs was less than half the monthly average so far this year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with unemployment remaining essentially unchanged at more than five percent.
Democrats say the slow recovery is partly because the president's record tax cuts unfairly favor wealthier Americans and are driving up federal deficits.
President Bush says Democrats are engaged in what he calls a kind of class warfare that fails to see the fundamental fairness of tax cuts for all Americans. In his weekly radio address, Mr. Bush said lower taxes are strengthening the spirit of American enterprise.
"When people are allowed to keep more of what they earn, that is good for families trying to make ends meet, good for businesses looking for new customers and good for those looking for jobs in our expanding economy," he said.
Senator Kerry says the president's economic policies are driving many of those who are looking for work into lower paying jobs, without benefits.
In the Democratic radio address, the party's presumptive presidential candidate said his economic plan boosts funding for education and health care to improve conditions for American workers.
"It is a plan that puts and keeps good paying jobs at the heart of our economy," retorted Senator Kerry. "It closes loopholes that pay companies to move our jobs overseas."
Senator Kerry used his radio address to mark the 40th anniversary of the U.S. Civil Rights Act, which outlawed most racial discrimination. He has been criticized in the past week for not paying enough attention to African-American voters,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who traditionally support Democratic candidates.
The Massachusetts Senator said those who struggled for civil rights must not slumber under what he called the false assumption that the work is done,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"We've removed the barriers of hate that kept us from drinking at the same water fountain or attending the same school," he said. "The next step in our journey must be to remove the barriers that keep us from drinking at the same fountain of opportunity."
